Villagers scramble for dead elephant meat

Nyeri - Residents of Leshau Pondo shopping centre along Nyeri-Nyahururu highway scrambled for meat from an elephant carcass that was found dead near Aberdare forest.
They said it was an early Christmas gift from God.
While armed with knives, pangas, axes and other sharp objects, each struggled for a chance to get a share of the animal and efforts by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) rangers to stop them were futile.
The more than 100 people defied the rangers’ orders and reined on the male animal with their butchering equipment.

The officers said the animal died from natural causes as they removed the tusks and ferried them to the KWS Nyahururu station leaving villagers to enjoy the meat.
The villagers said rogue elephants have been wreaking havoc in their farms.
