Vihiga MCAs to pocket KES 1.2M upon retirement

Vihiga - Over KES 50 million will be used as send off package for Vihiga MCAs when they retire in 2017.
In a notice of motion tabled at the assembly Wednesday evening by Muhudu ward representative, Jackson Musoga, the MCAs began preparing for their gratuity package, two years before the 2017 elections.
The package would be a send off gift for the 39 MCAs and speaker at the end of their term, where each will pocket up to KES 1.2 million.
Musoga placed the notice of motion that would push for the establishment of the gratuity kitty, fastest possible.
While tabling a notice of motion 152, Musoga said the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) provides for gratuity to MCAs.
"The gratuity will be paid to MCAs for services rendered at the end of five years," said Musoga.

If Musoga's motion is given the nod by the county legislators, it would see the assembly work with LAPFUND to manage gratuity for members.
The assembly would deliberate on the creation of an account where the money will be kept waiting to be handed over to the MCAs at the end of their term.
One of the members who spoke to News24 on condition of anonymity said that already, most of the members have no hope of going back due to many vested interests from many members of the public who have began their campaigns for 2017 elections.
“Majority of the members are not very sure whether they will be re-elected as there is already tough competition on the ground even before the seats are declared vacant,” he said.
