Vihiga - Two men armed with AK47 riffles attacked the director of Governor’s Press Service in Vihiga County, Peter Atsiaya, on Wednesday evening robbing him off KES15 000 and a phone.
The director was heading to his home at Gambogi after attending the governor’s function at Sosa Hotel at around 8:45pm when he noted a motorcycle which was trailing him.
“When I diverged from the road, the guys came closer and pretended to be asking for the direction, when one of them pulled an AK47 all of a sudden and pointed it to me,” Atsiaya said.
They asked him to surrender the car keys, money and the phone which he promptly gave them.
“After I had given them the money that I had, they thoroughly harassed me before setting me free, and gave me back my car keys. They only went with the money and the phone,” he said.
Atsiaya, who was The Standard's Kakamega Bureau Chief before joining the governor’s office, said that he was grateful the robbers had not inflicted any harm on him.
He has since reported at the Gambogi police post, where he was assured that police are going to investigate the matter.
This comes even after cases of insecurity in the region have been escalating over the past few months.
Recently, Vihiga Police boss, Alfred Angengo, confirmed that they had arrested some youths with homemade guns and were prodding further if more residents in the area who are terrorising other people on the ground are armed.
