University student shot stealing

08 March 2013, 18:17 Kelvin Wanjohi

A student of Nairobi university was among two people shot dead by police after they defied orders to stop in a botched transformer vandalisation at Marmanet in Nyahururu District on Thursday.

Confirming the incident, Nyandarua North Police Chief Benjamin Onsongo said they received a tip of from the public and went to the scene of crime long before the suspects arrived.

Locating themselves strategically, the first suspect, who according to the police was an expert in the practice of pulling down transformers owing to the speed he used, arrived and successfully managed to pull it down in the dusk incident.

Police pounced on him and upon interrogation, he told them that there were other suspects in the mission who were to arrive at the scene using a saloon vehicle.

Later, with police keeping vigil, the two among them a university student came as planned and were also arrested.

They further revealed to the police that there were other two more who were to arrive at the scene riding a motorcycle.

They came but they sensed police presence since they saw many people at the scene, took an about turn and fled.

The police gave them a chase for several kilometres along the Nyeri-Nyahururu road.

The suspects diverted into a narrow footpath and the police then opened fire killing them on the spot.

Police identified one of them as a student at Nairobi University.

The arrested suspects are in police custody and will be arraigned in court once investigations are completed.

The bodies were taken to Nyahururu District Hospital mortuary.
