Four suspected gangsters were gunned down Sunday afternoon by police at Kesogon shopping center in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County.
A pistol and other electronic equipment including TV sets amounting to thousands of shillings suspected to have been stolen were recovered after police raided their hideout in the 3PM incident.
Confirming the incident, Kitale OCPD James Mitugo said that the suspects have been terrorizing Wananchi across the county saying that they are linked to the upsurging insecurity in the area that has left more than ten people dead in the last two months.
“We have been following them for long. This is the group that has been denying our people peace and we are telling their accomplices that we are coming for them because we know where they are,” said Mitugo
He lauded the residents for volunteering information.
An eye witness who requested for anonymity said that two of those killed had rented a house a few months ago and their activities were unknown.
However, an unconfirmed report from the residents indicates that among those killed was an IT student at Mount Kenya University Kitale campus.
The student was identified as Adam Murage and had accompanied his friend who was called to repair a TV set by the suspects, but unfortunately they we sprayed with bullets by the flying squad, dying on the spot.
“We know the electrician who was killed; we usually call him Major. He was a good person and he had been called by the suspects to help them repair a television set. The police did not even give them time to surrender,” his neighbour who witness the incident narrated adding that the MKU student had just arrived from church.
When contacted, Kitale OCPD said that they have launched investigations to ascertain the information and promised to cooperate with the two families to unfold the truth.
Currently, area residents and the families of those who were mistakenly killed want the inspector general of police David Kimayo to intervene and ensure justice is done.
The incident comes barely a week after Trans Nzoia County Governor Patrick Khaemba requested the IG to deploy the elite squad to eliminate terror groups that have been terrorising the county residents.
Last week, two more Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPDs), were sent to Endebes and Cherang’any constituencies to help the Kitale boss intensify security in the area after many incidents of robbery and killings of businessmen engulfed the county.
The bodies of the deceased were removed to Kitale District Mortuary.
