University gives 10-day elections break

27 February 2013, 15:09Rodgers Buluma

Students at the Technical University of Mombasa have been given a notice to vacate the university premises as the university closes temporarily to pave way for the elections that will be done on Monday.

The temporary closure of the university commences on 28th February until 10th March 2013, and classes to resume on 11th of March.

Students have been offered a notice to vacate the premises by 10 am on Thursday.

The closure of the institution has been caused by the tension that is there and fear of post election violence following the 2007-2008 incident.

Though the closure of the Technical University of Mombasa is a precaution measure, it will see a large number of votes lost as more than 2 000 students had registered as voters in Muvita constituency with the consideration that voter registration was undertaken while students were on session.

The number of vote wastage is expected to rise even more as the other universities are also said to be on their way to close temporarily until the voting exercise is over.

The closure of universities is said to be a measure taken to avoid the use of the students to course havoc during and after the elections.

Tension has been all over Mombasa and this has seen a large number of people travel back home for fear of recurrence of the 2007/08 pev.
