Universities fault UASU, KUSU misappropriation claims

Nairobi - The Vice Chancellors committee has lashed out at both the University Academic Staff Union (UASU) and the Kenya University Staff Union (KUSU) over claims that university administrations misappropriated funds awarded by government.
The vice chancellors committee chairman, Mabel Imbuga told the Parliamentary Committee on Education, Science and Technology that no money was misappropriated adding that over half of the allocated KES 3.9 billion shillings is yet to be spent.
Imbuga, who is also the VC at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, said that the universities still have KES 2.1 billion in their accounts.
The UASU Secretary Genaral, Muga K’Olale had claimed that both the Ministry of Education Science and Technology and the VCs cannot be relied upon thus holding that the two Unions be involved in the audit exercise.
K’Olale stated that they suspect the ministry withheld some funds noting that their involvement will determine the exercise’s transparency.
