Unattended bag causes bomb scare in Nyeri

13 May 2014, 08:06 Joseph Njung’eh

Nyeri - Business operations were disrupted in Nyeri town on Monday afternoon after unattended bag that residents feared had explosives was found at Prestige Plaza.

The bag had been left at the building by a young man who was set to join Dedan Kimathi University of Technology for further studies.

According to area OCPD Adiel Nyange, security details manning the building informed police that there was a suitcase in the building that residents claimed had a bomb inside.

The incident caused stir in the busy town for more than three hours.

All operations were disrupted after reports went around, making residents mill at the scene to witness considering that it was the first incident in the area.

Police officers had a hard time controlling the large crowd which increased as the clock ticked.

Nyange reported that on arrival at the scene police evacuated everybody from the storey building given the security situation in the country.

“We first evacuated everyone from the building that houses more than 600 people and kept them about 300 metres away. We later called in bomb experts to check at the situation and they confirmed there was nothing dangerous in the bag,” said the OCPD.

Later a young man, Danson Karegi accompanied by his father went to the scene claiming to own the bag.

He was questioned by police and later ordered to open the bag to authenticate everything that was inside.

It was later confirmed that the bag contained his books, clothes, shoes and other personal effects.

The OCPD added that the young man had registered to join Kimathi University but had not followed rightful procedures forcing him to leave to the university’s main campus to clear with the school management.

Nyange said Karegi left the bag at a corridor in the building without informing anyone including the security officers.

“We have confirmed that he had left to the main campus for clearance,” said Nyange.

Nyange added that the man had no ill intention since he also produced his registration papers from the school.

He further asked the residents to be alert at all time and report to police any suspicious person or item.
