Uhuru offers government scholarships to students studying abroad

14 August 2015, 14:18

Nairobi - President Uhuru Kenyatta Friday at State House, Nairobi hosted a group of students under the Equity Group Foundation ‘wings to fly’ programme who are joining various international universities.

The students went to bid the President and First Lady Margaret Kenyatta farewell as they prepared to leave for their campuses.

President Kenyatta urged the students and other Kenyans studying abroad to remain focused to successfully complete their studies.

He said with dreams backed up by determination the students should come back home to serve their motherland and be part of the country’s transformative agenda.

He told the students to be Kenya’s good ambassadors so that the international community can perceive Kenya positively from what they do.

“Remain committed to the ideals that brought you this far despite challenging backgrounds. Get international experience and come back home to implement the positive lessons learnt,” the President said.

He also urged the students to be people of integrity in all their endeavours and avoid things that have no bearing on better livelihoods.

“Use the knowledge acquired to drive the country forward,” the President said.

He assured them that the government attached a lot of importance on the youth and has started various programmes to empower them.

President Kenyatta told the Head of Public Service, Joseph Kinyua, who was present, to ensure that graduates coming back after studies are considered for internships in various government departments.

The President said the government is implementing policies that facilitate Kenyans ready to come back after studies abroad.

The measures, President Kenyatta said, include setting up of the Diaspora Liaison office and posting all vacancies in public institutions online for transparent recruitment.

The First Lady wished the students well in their studies saying “together we can create a better Kenya.”

Equity Bank Chairman Peter Munga asked beneficiaries of the sponsorship programme not to squander the chances.

Student representatives thanked the President and the First Lady for their efforts to transform the country.

They assured President Kenyatta that they would come back after their studies abroad to contribute to the country’s development.
