Uhuru locked me out of Obama visit, Atwoli complains

29 July 2015, 14:56 Victor Tinto

Nairobi - COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli says that President Uhuru Kenyatta sidelined Kenyans in the trip by US President Barack Obama to the country.

Atwoli stated that for example, COTU was not invited to the State House dinner for Obama where Uhuru spoke about Toma Mboya, himself a former trade union leader.

" As a Kenyan who leads the labour movement and speaks for East Africa under the banner of the East African Trade Union Confederation, for Africa as the President of the Organization of African Trade Union Unity, and more importantly leads the organization that to date still has in library the Obama Senior files; the organizers should have seen the ambiguity in the whole address in inviting me at the banquet," Atwoli said in a paid newspaper advert.

" We are not indeed complaining but as a matter of international concern and knowing very well that American workers supported the Democratic Party that sponsored Obama to White House and labour Security comes from workers, how could organizers omit COTU while remembered to pay special tribute to late Mboya," he added.

COTU he said, had a right to be invited for the festivities, seeing the role they play as an organization in protecting the welfare of Kenyans also blasting the government for not taking care of the country's heroes.

" The government must recognize living heroes and move away from the norm of celebrating heroes when dead or languishing in abject poverty," he stated.

Obama was in the country three days, where he met several government, opposition and civil society leaders.
