Uhuru likely to travel to ICC?

01 October 2014, 19:32 William Korir

Nairobi - President Uhuru Kenyatta will likely travel to the International Criminal Court ICC, a source has told News24.

The president has been ordered to attend the October 8 Status Conference in the Hague by the trial judges, who say that he must at-least attend first the key event of his trial.

There had been stories of him using a video link as he has done before, but that bid has been rejected.

And according to a source at State House, the president is not likely to dissent to the order to travel to the Hague, just like his deputy William Ruto.

" The president is considering going because the options are now very thin. He either goes and gets it done with or risks building more rows that can be avoided, the source that did not want to be named said.

The president had shown a willingness to cooperate by attending via video link but with that out of bounds and the conference just a week away, there are frantic efforts to look for a way out.

" There will be the African Union AU effort to stop him going, but that will be likely taken as dissent by the court and that is not needed at a time when the case is collapsing.

" Look, we all know the case is dead. Is there need to give the ICC new ammunition? No, the source added.

The ICC Tuesday rejected a request by Uhuru's lawyers to have him excused from a hearing next week, saying the case was at a "critical juncture".

"The chamber, by majority finds that the requirements of justice in this case necessitate the physical presence of the accused in court," The ICC said. The chamber considers the status conference to constitute a 'critical juncture' in the proceedings," a three-judge bench said.

The Judges scheduled a status conference for October 8, after the prosecution claimed they had been denied vital information by the government and summoned the president to be present.

His team however, cited a summit in Kampala Uganda on the same day which Uhuru had to attend as President of Kenya and the chairman of the Heads of State of the East African Community as reason for his unavailability.
