Uhuru lauds KDF, soldiers' sacrifice

28 May 2014, 18:40

Nairobi - President Uhuru Kenyatta has lauded the effort put in by the Kenya Defence Forces KDF and the sacrifices many have and will take to defend the country.

The president was speaking during the Defence Forces Recruits Passing Out Parade at Recruits Training School, Eldoret where a new set of soldiers were officially welcomed to the force.

He cited their role in ensuring that the country and region at large becomes a safer place and the sacrifice some have taken in dying for the safety of others.

With the KDF actively involved in peacekeeping efforts in Somalia and other parts of the continent, the president also asked them to look forward to improving as individuals in their craft.

" You, the recruits who graduate today, will be asked to defend your countrymen, with your lives if necessary. 'any of you will be asked to live away from friends and family, he said of the plight awaiting the soldiers.

He did add that the country was continuously grateful for the sacrifice taken in defence of the nation by the soldiers.

" Your fellow countrymen recognize your ability, and your unity. That is why they have bestowed this great trust upon you. Their hope, and mine, is that you will never betray that trust or let them down in any way. You must continue to lead by example, he added.

The president further reiterated his government's mission of improving the forces by putting in additional funds into their operations and maintainence.

" My Government will stand with you. An unprecedented increase in funding to match these new challenges will come in the next financial year. We will give you the new equipment you need to serve us and we will continually give you the best training available and constantly look to your welfare, he added.

He did also note the increase in the number of female recruits, adding that the disciplined forces resemble the face of the nation.

"I note with appreciation that a number of female recruits completed the training with their male counterparts today. This is yet another mark of my Government's commitment to equal opportunities for all our people. That is as it should be. Our defence forces have long been, and will continue to be, a symbol of our nationhood.

" You are drawn from all across the country, men and women from different communities, living and working together to defend the nation. You are a wonderful example of our country at its best a country in which our differences of origin, race, religion or sex are sub-ordinated to patriotic service.
