The residents of Nyahururu and adjoining districts sent a clear message to Uhuru: We’ll vote for you, but forget the TNA 6-piece idea. And quick-thinker Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta, the Jubilee Coalition presidential candidate, accompanied by his running mate William Ruto, without the slightest reference to his mother-party TNA asked the people to vote for candidates fielded by Jubilee-member or friendly parties.
Uhuru was speaking in Nyahururu town where he had recently pitched tent accompanied by his Running mate William Ruto.
Uhuru repeatedly appealed to the local people to vote for Jubilee candidates, saying that in the last General Election, Kibaki’s victory was challenged by the fact that the number of PNU MPs was less than that of the opponent ODM.
Lack of popularity raises flag
Doubts about the popularity of some local TNA candidates surfaced when the multitude refused to endorse them through acclamation as they introduced themselves.
In front of the pavilion was a 'forest' of posters and placards mounted on long handles of candidates from other parties, especially those who had initially been very popular during the controversial TNA’s primaries.
Posters pulled down to avoid distracting speaker
At one moment Ruto was so irritated by the posters that he requested the people to lower them down to avoid distracting the speakers.
The people respectfully obeyed Ruto, but no sooner had he and Uhuru finished their speeches than the forest of posters and placards shot up, underlining the message that not all those on TNA will sail through.
The TNA candidate for the Laikipia West parliamentary seat Dr. Wachira Karani, who played master of ceremony, seemed dwarfed by his major opponent, Engineer Joseph Githinji, who is running on Mazingira Greens Party of Kenya, having hopped to the party after disputing the TNA nomination results that saw him lose to Wachira in a narrow margin.
When the chance for gubernatorial candidates came and Joshua Irungu took to the podium, his major opponent Mburu Kamau stood next to him waiting to take the microphone. Mburu sat in the pavilion among other dignitaries and candidates, and was spotted shaking hands with Uhuru and Ruto.
No personal grudges against opponents
He said they would not relent in their quest to make the country better for all, adding they had no personal grudges against their opponents.
Regarding the recent Kimemia saga, Ruto said that Raila and his team did not seem to have read the Constitution as it was very explicit that civil servants were not permitted to involve themselves in politics or electioneering.
Ruto, the URP leader, said that CORD leaders had panicked.
