Governors from the upper Eastern region last week met the USAID Mission Director in Kenya to discuss the on-going USAID projects in the Counties and other areas of cooperation in relation to development partnership with the agency.
Karen Freeman met Governors Peter Munya of Meru county, Ukur Yattani of Marsabit, Godana Doyo of Isiolo, Samuel Ragwa of Tharaka-Nithi and Moses Lenoikulal of Samburu together with experts in areas of Agriculture, Health, Governance, and Education.
“USAID has briefed the Governors on our on-going programs in their Counties and we have listened to the needs and priorities of the Governors, staff and the County citizens,” added Freeman as she briefed the five Governors.
USAID is supporting programs in all 47 counties of Kenya. The agency’s multi-year program in Kenya is investing more than one billion US dollars (KES 80 billion) in the country.
Freeman further said the agency will work with private sector, civil society and the government to identify Kenyan-led solutions to unique challenges and opportunities to individual Counties.
“We are not able to do all things in all places. USAID will work strategically with government, the private sector, and civil society to identify Kenyan-led solutions to the unique challenges and opportunities at the County level,” said the USAID Director.
USAID has not made any specific commitments to any Governors to date, but in the near future the agency will be launching several new 'Feed the Future' programs in 27 counties. These are programs that were funded prior to devolution.
Freeman urged the Governors and their technical staff to tailor the programs to the individual Counties.
Speaking after the consultative meeting, Governor Peter Munya said the five Counties had resolved to form an inter-County forum which would deal with various issues affecting their Counties.
In recent weeks, USAID has also accepted invitations to meet the Governors for Uasin Gishu, Migori, Homa Bay, Kisumu, Nandi, Machakos, Taita Taveta, Siaya, Kwale and Busia.
Senior American and Kenyan staff have met the Governors and briefed them on programs that USAID is supporting in their Counties.
In the coming weeks, USAID is invited to meet with Governors for Elgeyo Marakwet, Turkana, Nyamira, Kirinyaga, Makueni, Laikipia, Kakamega and Vihiga.
