A recently released United Nations (UN) report is raising an alarm over the undermining of efforts being put in by various ecological foundations established world over that are involved in supporting food security and biodiversity across the nations.
The report was produced in conjunction with other global agencies which included the World Resource Institute (WRI), the World Bank, the World Food Program (WFP), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO).
In the report, countries have been warned against neglecting proposals signed upon to oversee attainment of food security especially in the 3rd World states which have been accused of failure to factor in the planet’s nature-based services into agricultural based planning techniques.
According to figures released in the report, about 1.3 billion tons of food each year is lost through avoidable inefficiencies presented along the food delivery chain.
The United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) says that the situation is further complicated and worsened as result of destruction of ecological systems caused by human activities. Mostly affected are the foundations that were established to support food security with the inclusion of biodiversity across the developing countries such as Kenya for instance. Lack of government support has been blamed too as a contributory factor of occasioned inefficiencies.
Among the recommendations provided by the global organizations is by having all the states support the efforts being put in by UNEP that aim at supporting food production so as to safeguard the countries and the world at large against unforeseeable disasters.
Currently on an estimated seven billion global population, the world is projected to be nearing towards nine billion mark by the year 2050 and it’s the high time the issues pertaining food security need to be adequately addressed. In the report, measures to be adopted should be streamlined in the context of ushering in a green economy in order to prevent ecological damage as the world is already experiencing the effects attributed by Global Warming.
Environmentally degrading agricultural practices, unsustainable water usage, overfishing among other malpractices are being targeted by the UNEP report and focus should be increased on ways of how to mitigate such activities that have for long lead to undermine food security in the country, region and the globe at large.
