Two suspected robbers escape lynching

10 January 2014, 14:23 Joseph Njung’eh

Nyeri - Two suspected robbers on Friday escaped death after they were attacked by a mob in Nyeri town following their botched attempt to rob an M-Pesa shop.

An angry mob descended on the two who had tried to withdraw KES 30,000 from the M-Pesa Agent at Jamii Cyber café which is located in Osman Alluh building, but their accomplice managed to escape.

The M-Pesa outlet manager, Bernard Njogu, told the media that one of the suspects, who identified himself as Baraza, came and requested to withdraw the money. However, they told him he could only withdraw KES 18,000.

After initiating the transaction, a different name appeared on the account and when he was asked to produce his original identification card he resisted.

The M-Pesa attendant however insisted that he produce an ID card but the suspect went out and came back accompanied by two other men who claimed to be police officers.

The manager challenged them to identify themselves properly and certify that they were police officers but they instead insisted on finalising the transaction.

One of them went out and escaped after a heated argument which had attracted members of the public.

The manager raised an alarm and the remaining two were captured by members of the public as they tried to escape to a waiting vehicle.

The crowd that had quickly gathered went on to attack the duo but were rescued and escorted to Nyeri police station by police officers who were on patrol.
