Laikipia - Kenya wildlife Service (KWS) rangers who were accompanied by police officers on Wednesday gunned down two suspected poachers at Solio Ranch.
The suspects, who were allegedly planning to kill white rhinos in the ranch, were killed after the officers laid ambush on them.
Confirming the incident, KWS Mountain Conservation Area assistant director, Aggrey Maumo said the police officers recovered a 303 rifle that was loaded with three rounds of ammunition, a sword and a pair of pliers from the suspects.
He said the suspected poachers were shot dead in the sanctuary after they were cornered by the officers before carrying out their mission.
Maumo stressed that the sanctuary, which has the endangered white rhinos, is highly guarded by qualified security apparatus adding that the suspects had tried to gain access into the ranch on Monday night but their plans were thwarted.
“We believe that the same suspects are the ones who tried to intrude into the sanctuary on Monday night. But this time round, we have dealt with them squarely,” he said.
The assistant director observed that the new Wildlife Act will greatly help them fight poaching in the country.
