Nairobi - Two suspected Al Shabaab militia were shot dead in Mandera town Northern Kenya Sunday night following an ambush by police.
The two were in a Toyota Probox vehicle when they were stopped by police at a roadblock but defied the order.
They sped off and hurled grenades at the policemen on the roadblock, who managed to chase them down and kill them after a short period of gunfire.
Mandera police boss Noah Mukua told News24 that two of the militia men were killed whilst a third escaped.
Eight grenades were found in the vehicle, added to the three that were thrown at police but did not explode.
" We received reports from locals about the suspicious vehicle and thus erected a roadblock to check on it but they defied it. We are grateful for the information from the public and ask that they continue doing so, he said.
News of the killings though, caused tension in the area since the two were apparently well known persons, with both allegedly considered as Sheikh's by the area locals.
Mukua though insisted that such reports were null.
" When you stop an innocent person, why would they run away and then again, why did they hurl grenades at the police, he posed.
Mandera has borne the brunt of militia attacks thanks to its proximity to the border with Somalia, with hundreds of small arm and grenade attacks having taken place in and around the area in the last two years.
