Two shot dead in Vihiga cold blood murder

25 July 2014, 13:22 Dareel Eric

Vihiga - Two young men in their twenties were Wednesday evening shot dead by unknown assailants at Makuchi village, Cheptulu shopping centre in Hamisi constituency, Vihiga County.

Julius Cheti, a chemist operator and Benard Muhindi, a gold dealer succumbed to the injuries after being shot each three times in the neck, chest and stomach while at their business premises on the fateful night.

The 7pm incident took place as the two were chatting with a third person suspected to be an accomplice of the suspects on the run, who has since disappeared.

Eyewitnesses said that the two suspects allegedly arrived on a motorbike which they also used to escape after a targeted shooting, leaving the villagers scampering for their lives.

Muhindi, who succumbed to the bullet injuries is survived of a wife and two children both aged below 10 years.

Area Chief, Josephine Khalwale said that the two robbery suspects armed with pistols first attacked the gold dealer, who was their main target.

"The two came and pretended to be gold dealers and the late Muhindi thought they wanted to either buy or sell gold but then they turned against him and shot him three times," Khalwale said, adding that the chemist operator was shot while trying to rescue Muhindi.

Police have linked the incident to business rivalry while at the same time pledging to investigate into the incident further.

Mrs Muhindi said that her husband had withdrawn a sum of KES 400 000 from the bank early in the day for business.

"He (Muhindi) brought all the money he had withdrawn and together we planned for the day’s business," Mrs Muhindi recounted.

Police say that the suspects visited the gold dealer around midday and could have pursued him from the bank.

The killing came barely 24 hours after a mutilated body of an unidentified woman was found dumped at Kaimosi forest, about five kilometres from the evening shooting scene.

The bodies of the deceased have since been taken to the Vihiga Hospital mortuary in Mbale.
