Two killed, scores injured in Bungoma attacks

29 September 2014, 08:10 David Wekesa

Bungoma - Two people were killed and several others injured when an armed gang of thugs attacked Sikusi and Chwele residents in Bungoma County.

Chwele chief Henry Wafula said the gang moved from house to house at night, and slashed residents with machetes.

“I received a call from my people saying they have been attacked.

"When the police rushed Sikusi, the gang escaped and went on with the attacks at Chwele market, where several watchmen were injured,” Wafula said.

He said residents started searching for the criminals in the morning.

They found a suspect, who was identified as Kenyatta Soita, at Landi Matope in Chwele market, taking local brew.

“The suspect had a mobile phone which was stolen at night. The residents took him to the road and stoned him to death while others escaped,” Wafula said.

The suspect is said to have been released from Bungoma prisons after serving a jail term of seven years following a robbery case.

Bokoli MCA Jack Kawa urged security agencies to investigate the attacks, which were similar to the ones that were witnessed in the same county last year.

“In Kabuchai constituency, people are killed like animals. I think somebody in the security department is sleeping on the job,” Kawa said.
