Kampala - Two students have been severely injured as police battled students of Makerere University who staged a demonstration this morning.

The unidentified students were part of the group of thousands that stormed the University administration block protesting the increment in Graduation fees.

"Two students have been injured by rubber bullets shot t them by the police. They have been rushed to Mulago hospital.''

The graduation fees now stand at 220,000 Uganda shillings from 90,000.

Several vehicles at the campus were damaged by rioting students who hurled stones at the wind screen.

Meanwhile a meeting is under way between the university management and student leaders to forge a way forward.

The Police Commandant Kampala North Samuel Omara pleaded with the students to avoid violence but rather dialogue with the university authorities over any grievances.

Omara said,'' We have brought the situation under control. We expect the administration to soon come to an understanding with the students.''

With a population of about 40,000 students, Makerere is the biggest public university in the country and one of the best in east Africa.
