Two illegal expats released on KES 100K bail

Mombasa - Two Chinese nationals have appeared before a Mombasa court for working in the country without valid work permits contrary to section 53 (1) as read with section 53 (2) of the Kenyan Citizenship and Immigration Act 2011.
The two Chinese citizens namely Zhang Jianhu and Sam Dexin were arrested on the July 10 after they were found working at the Startimes Media Limited along the Haile Selassie Avenue in Mombasa where they were working as technicians.
The two were released on a cash bail of KES 100, 000 each, following an application by the defense team led by lawyer Elijah Withaka. They were also allowed to go on with their duties as the case continues.
The two are facing three counts of being in the country illegally, being attached to work in the country without legal work permits and being illegally in the country.
The immigration prosecutor,. Kipkoech Sang, applied for the court to stop the two from appearing at their work places until the case is sealed, but the court through Lady Magistrate Irene Roguru turned down the application saying that their appearance at the work place was to be used as evidence if at all found with a case to answer. The hearing of the case is to commence on March 28, 2014.
