Nyeri - Two sisters were burnt beyond recognition Sunday night when a fierce fire gutted down their house at Jamhuri Estate in Thika town.
Police said the two children aged three and five years were asleep in their house when the fire broke at around midnight.
Their mother had reportedly left the house to sell coffee to night boda boda operators at an unknown destination leaving the house locked from outside.
Attempts by neighbours to put out the fire were futile as it spread very fast destroying 30 other houses.
An affected neighbour, Martin Kirika, said when the fire went off the children’s remains were found huddled together behind the door an indication that they had tried to escape.

He said the fire was aggravated by a gas cylinder that burst in a neighboring house.
Over 50 families were left homeless and property of unknown value destroyed.
By the time the fire fighters arrived at the scene, the houses that were made of iron sheet had been reduced to ashes.
