Tussle over county executive seat
26 March 2013, 17:51
Laikipia County governor-elect Joshua Irungu has responded to allegations by a section of leaders and businessmen that he compiled a list of people to be awarded positions in the county executive.
Irungu refuted the claims posed by the leaders and businessmen from Laikipia East constituency who allege that the governor-elect has already planned to give all the seats to people from Laikipia West constituency.
“The Transition Authority is yet to issue guidelines on the selection of the county executive committee and I wonder why some people have started entangling me in the issue,” said Irungu.
He further stated that all persons interested in the positions must be qualified and be approved by members of the county assembly, adding that he cannot involve himself in such petty issues.
Earlier, TNA vice chairman Christopher Maitho and businessman David Ngarariga had alleged that the governor-elect is from Laikipia West just like the senator-elect GG Kariuki, women representative Jane Machira Apollos and speaker to the county assembly Patrick Kariuki, citing that Irungu had indeed compiled the list.
They claimed that the governor-elect compiled the list of county executive members without consulting people from the entire Laikipia County which consists of Laikipia East, North and West.
They further claimed that people from Laikipia West constituency acted so selfishly by bagging all the county seats.
However, speaking on the phone, Irungu maintained that he is geared towards developing the county saying that he has no time to engage in such issues.
He said that the Transition Authority is mandated to oversee all operations of the county affairs and that anybody interested in the county executive position should make an application for the job.
