Trouble at ODM as leaders decline new party positions

Nairobi - ODM is in trouble, and in a tight spot that party leader Raila Odinga will find tough to get out of.
The decision over the weekend by the party to award senior positions to a cross section of leaders was met with derision by some members who opted to not take up their places in the new party structure.
Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya was first to decline the offer, saying that he is unhappy with the attempt by party leader Raila Odinga to please everyone in the party by creating and awarding many positions to party members.
He added that he was unhappy the party did not just go the elections route to favour democracy.
Oparanya was to take up the position of deputy party leader.
Others who also quit their positions were MPs Paul Otuoma and Florence Mutua who were to be the deputy party chairman and deputy organizing secretaries respectively.
They all said that it was a move that was well thought out and needed considering the divisions within the party.
" It’s our conviction that the manner the process was conducted does
not reflect the will of the members of the ODM family and therefore it
would be egocentric for us to take up these positions merely for
purposes of personal aggrandizement,” the three said.
" Merely handpicking individuals for party positions does not address
the fundamental, underlying issues that the party has to resolve first, they added.
The move will be a blow to Odinga, who has been fighting rebels within the party for a long time now and hoped that the new list would offer a sense of respite.
