Nakuru - One traffic police officer was on Wednesday attacked by a matatu driver in Nakuru town who was found picking passengers in an undesignated area.
According to an eyewitness, Philip Nzioka, the commotion began after the police officer stopped the vehicle but the driver of Matatu attempted to speed off only to hit two other public vehicles.
“The officer stopped the matatu since he was picking passengers in an undesignated area and that's when the driver attempted to escape,” he said.
Nzioka said that the police officer attempted to arrest the driver and that is when the Matatu driver descended on the officer with blows and and kicks before members of the public came to the rescue of the officer.
The matatu driver attempted to flee the scene on foot but was intercepted by the public.
The mid-morning drama caused a huge traffic snarl up along the Geoffry Kamau Road as curious onlookers milled around to catch a glimpse of the fiasco.
“He jumped off the vehicle only to attack the officer who was trying to arrest him,” said the eyewitness.
The three vehicles involved in the accident were towed to Nakuru central police station.
The rogue matutu driver was also arrested and taken to Nakuru police station.
