Kwale - A tourist of Germany nationality on Monday drowned in the sea while swimming at Shimoni area.
The deceased, 62-year-old Heine Roedling, was swimming together with his wife at Kisite Mpunguti Marine Park where they had toured.
Msambweni sub-County administration police commander, Wilson Gichuhi, confirmed the incident and said that the deceased died on arrival at Shimoni health center.
He said that Roedling, who was rescued immediately after he drowned, died after developing a problem with his breathing system.
According to the wife of the deceased, her husband has had breathing complications for a while.
“On interrogation her wife revealed that the deceased was suffering from a heart disease which was frequently disturbing him. So when they were swimming, he developed a breathing problem before he was rushed to the health center but died on arrival,” he said.
Gichuhi said that Roedling was rescued by beach operators who had accompanied the two tourists.
He said the two lived at their friend’s cottage in Ukunda and not hotel, since they are residential tourists in the area who frequently visit Kisite Mpunguti Marine Park.
Shimoni Kenya Wildlife officer in charge, John Wambua, said that tourists are allowed to swim in the park.
Mutua said the deceased was swimming 11 kilometers away from the beach when the incident occurred.
“The body of the deceased was taken to Pandya hospital in Mombasa as we continue investigating the incident,” he noted.
The incident took place a week after three fishermen drowned after their boat capsized. Two of them were however rescued and their colleagues’ body recovered on Monday at Magandia in Kwale.
