Scores of people from Kocholwo location of Keiyo South District recently escaped death by a whisker when raging floods swept away a vehicle they were travelling in.
Among the victims of the weekend incident was area chief Joseph Yego who swam to safety amid the storm waters after jumping out of the lorry.
The ill fated canter lorry is said to have been ferrying traders from Kapkayo market in Baringo County and on reaching Kapkelelwa river, a tributary of Kerio River, caught stuck in mud.
"As we were trying to push it out of the river, we heard a roaring sound but thought it was thunder far way beyond the Tugen Hills," said the chief when contacted for comment.
He added, ‘Within a few minutes we were all engulfed in water, and it is through God’s grace we managed to survive the storm.’
The administrator blamed poor road conditions in the region for the incident, saying that if the road was in good state they could have evaded the predicament.
Area residents led by Brian Chebii called upon the government for quick intervention to retrieve the lorry. "Apparently, the lorry is on the verge of being swept downstream to Kerio River since we lack machinery to retrieve the lorry,’ said Chebii.
Chebii said that the Fluorspar Mining Company could have assisted in retrieving the vehicle, but when they sought assistance they were told that all the earth movers were being serviced.
By the time of filling this story the lorry was yet to be retrieved.
