Toddler dead as wall collapses in Busia

14 August 2014, 10:46 Jane Zack

Busia - Residents of Legio area in Busia Town woke up to a rude shock Wednesday when they found a two-year-old child dead after the wall of neighbour's house collapsed on her.

According to the eyewitnesses, the deceased, Faith Adhiambo was playing with other siblings when the wall curved in following heavy rains that pounded the area throughout the night.

Sources said the incident took place around 8.30am, adding that the same wall had collapsed a few months ago forcing the tenant to shift to the following house.

"The house has been posing major risks as it is not the first time it collapsed.  We have raised the alarm but nobody has heeded to our cries," said one of the tenants.

The locals have appealed to the Public Works department to carry out an audit of buildings in the County to ensure safety of residents.

They accused some landlords of reaping from tenants and failing to maintain their buildings, some of which are in poor state.

Police have launched investigations into the incident as Works officers moved in to assess the building with a view to establishing whether it was the fault of contractors.

The body of the deceased was moved to Busia District hospital awaiting postmortem examination.
