Nakuru - Three armed robbers among them a retired police officer were Thursday morning shot dead by police in a foiled bank robbery along the busy Kenyatta avenue in Nakuru town.
The three who were armed with AK 47 rifles had entered Family Bank immediately after it had opened for the day's business.
According to police reports, the three pretended to be customers who wanted to exchange US dollars with the local currency before they turned against the bank staff and ordered them to open the safe.
Nakuru police boss, Bernard kioko said that police officers who were assigned to guard the bank arrived as the gang was harassing the staff and a fire exchange ensued.

“The three armed robbers got hold of the safe keeper and forced him to open it but luckily enough, police officers guarding the bank arrived on time and the three were shot dead in an exchange. We found out that one of the robbers is a retired police officer who in fact used to guard the same bank when he served in the police force,” said Kioko.
Three AK 47 riffles and one round of ammunition were recovered from the gang.
