Three killed 10 days after presidential amnesty
12 July 2013, 19:14
Three people recently released from prison following Presidential pardon were Wednesday killed by irate members of the public at Muhoroni town.
The trio; Leonard Opundo, Veroline (Boswel) Atieno Otieno and another only identified as Otiato were cornered by a group of villagers who have been closely monitoring their movements since they returned from Kodiaga GK Prison following President Uhuru Kenyatta’s pardon.
Muhoroni District Commissioner Solomon Abwaku confirmed the incident saying that Yusuf Mustapha Mwaniki, who was among the suspects accused of being behind a series of muggings in the area, was rescued by police officers from the mob that was baying for his blood.
Abwaku said the suspects were released following the President’s July 1, 2013 pardon, ‘but as fate would have it they have been ultimately sent to be with their maker as the public declared that they are tired of sparing their lives even as they continue killing and robbing more victims’.
By the time of going to the press, the bodies of the trio had been taken to Muhoroni District Hospital awaiting postmortem.
DC Abwaku appealed to members of the public to guard against taking the law into their hands but instead hand over such suspects to the police to facilitate arrest of the other collaborators.
He said that by killing them, the suspects get buried with critical information which could otherwise lead to curbing a repeat of similar incidents in future.
