Vihiga - An 8-year-old school-going child and a 37-year-old motorcyclist lost their lives at Majengo market in Vihiga County Sunday morning after they were hit by a matatu that had lost control and veered off the road.
Another child, 5, died while undergoing treatment at the Vihiga Dispensary after being hit by the same vehicle, while three other people were left nursing injuries.
Confirming the incident, Vihiga Police OCPD, Alfred Angengo, said that initial investigations indicated that the vehicle had some mechanical problems.
“The vehicle spilled a lot of oil on the road, and after hitting the deceased persons, it moved a further 600 metres before it stopped,” said Angengo.
Passengers in the vehicle escaped unscathed with only one of them being slightly injured and taken to the hospital.
Eyewitnesses said that the vehicle, which belongs to the Respect Group, was speeding towards Majengo from Gisambai along the Kakamega - Kisumu road when the accident happened.
“When the vehicle reached the bump, it lost control and that is when we saw it veer off the road and hitting pedestrians,” one of the eyewitnesses said.
The deceased motorcyclist was parking his motorcycle when he was hit, whereas the children were crossing the road to go to school.
