The Menace that is the Hawkers in Nairobi

23 March 2012, 14:13

The hawkers maybe helping a few people in Nairobi but when it reaches an extent whereby other residents suffer at their expense it leads to big question as to whether those guys are really necessary.
I was recently on my way from Ngara to town on foot. This is one area where these guys have really camped and i have to say their business is booming.
However, all hell broke lose when i saw people running in all directions. Oblivious of what was happening, i continued with my journey. After making a few steps forward is when i discovered what was really happening: The anti-riot police were trying to clear the hawkers from the streets and they did it in the best they know how- teargas canisters!
With the suffocation and suffering that comes from teargas, i understood why people were running all over.
Such an incidence is therefore what makes me say that these hawkers ought not to be on the streets. They make some of us suffer. I have no problem with the police because that is the best way they know how to deal with the hawkers- and they do it with passion!...
