A bridge connecting Kenya with Uganda at Malaba town is on the verge of imminent collapsing, Teso North district commissioner Josephine Onunga as said.
Engineers from Uganda National Roads Authority toured the bridge with a promise to rehabilitate the dilapidated bridge.
The DC revealed that the state of the bridge was serious, thus her plea to the Kenya and Uganda governments to find an urgent solution.
Addressing the press in her Amagoro office, the DC said the on-going rains that is pounding the two sister nations had raised concerns over the lifespan of the bridge.
Onunga said communication between Kenya and Uganda is likely to be cut off and paralyze regional economies.
The DC also revealed that engineers from Kenya will soon start the construction of a new bridge, 50 metres from the current one.
Malaba residents also added their voice to the state of the bridge which was constructed in 1952 and which had a lifespan of only 15 years.
Former councilor Anthony Ekabten and Elkana Oteba said the government is waiting for a catastrophe to occur before they take action.
They said the safety of residents was paramount and appealed to Kenya and Uganda governments to save regional economies by finding a lasting solution to the collapsing bridge.
The in charge of Malaba Uganda Police station, Joseph Mwesigye said engineers from Uganda were due to start the repairs on Wednesday but failed to commence.
Led by Engineer Chris Opuchi, the engineers visited the bridge on May 23 with a view to finding a solution to its state.
However, Opuchi ruled out that the bridge could collapse anytime soon despite its age and promised to rehabilitate it.
The Engineer had promised to re-carpet the bridge within two weeks but his promise is yet to be fulfilled.
