Teen gets 10 years for raping middle-aged woman

27 May 2015, 10:49 Steven Njuguna

Nyahururu - A 19-year-old man was handed a 10-year jail by a Nyahururu court for rape.

Peter Ekiru pleaded guilty to the charges when he appeared before senior resident magistrate Peter Ndege.

It is alleged that Ekiru raped a middle-aged woman on May 24, this year at Kauka village, Laikipia west sub-county.

The court heard that the accused went to the victim’s house and lied to her that her sister had passed on and requested her to accompany him to Maili Saba, a neighbouring village. He also requested her to carry a rope and panga in case they needed to collect firewood.

On arrival at Maili Saba, he dragged her into a forest, tied her using the rope and forcefully raped her.

The court further heard that the accused left the victim tied and escaped into the forest after he heard students from a nearby school approaching.

The victim was rescued by the students after which she reported the matter to Nyahururu police station, before proceeding to Nyahururu District Hospital for medical examination and treatment.

Ekiru was arrested the following day and charged with the offence.

While delivering the ruling, Ndege said that a 10-year jail term was the minimum sentence for violent rape.

“I have also declared you a dangerous sexual offender and as such sentenced you to 10 years imprisonment,” said Ndege.

He was given 14 days to appeal.
