Nyeri - Kieni police on Thursday morning combed a form four leaver for allegedly abandoning her newborn baby in a dump site at Bagamoyo village in Kieni West sub-County.
Esther Nyaguthii Wang’ombe, 18, was some hours later arraigned in a Nyeri Court facing charges of concealing birth.
Appearing before Resident Magistrate Catherine Mburu, Nyaguthii however admitted to the offence which she committed on May 31, but informed the court that she resorted to the act because for fear of her parents.
She added that the man responsible for the pregnancy dumped her after he discovered the pregnancy.
She said her parents are harsh to her and therefore she could not risk informing them about her condition but she concealed the pregnancy till delivery when she gave birth and dumped the infant.
Remorseful Nyaguthii pleaded with the court for forgiveness saying her parents have relented and accepted to accommodate her and the baby.
She added that she committed the offence unwillingly in a bid to escape punishment from her father.
The infant was discovered by a village elder, Isaack Kariuki, who informed police at Nairutia station, according to Prosecutor Inspector Stancelous Mwangi.
The police officers took the infant to Nyeri Provincial General Hospital (PGH) for treatment before it was transferred to New Life Trust Children centre.
The Prosecution said investigations commenced in the village and later the accused person was identified as the offender.
Police went to the accused person’s home last week but did not arrest her for she was seating her KCSE exams and thus had decided to wait for her to complete.
Nyaguthii added that her father kept warning her that if she conceived before marriage she would face dire consequences and victimise her mother too.
The magistrate ordered the probation and children officers in the area to furnish the court with reports regarding the family prior to November 28. Nyaguthii remains in remand till then.
