Teachers lose money to twilight girls

20 February 2013, 15:07Elias Ngarae

Teachers’ organisations in Laikipia are raising alarm over the number of their members who are increasingly getting trapped by prostitutes in Nanyuki town.

Scores of teachers are said to have suffered broken homes after losing thousands of shillings to the twilight girls in the formerly white colonial settlers’ town whose night life is only rivaled by that of the coastal city of Mombasa.

The officials said the victims were losing their money mostly in pubs where the girls pitch tents at night and in their sex dens.

“The girls have caused many divorces among families. Some of them are going to an extent of wearing school uniform so as to attract the unsuspecting teachers and affluent traders,” a teacher, Peterson Njamiu Maina, said.

Last week, a 50 year old married public primary school teacher from the neighbouring Kieni East district lost KES 60 000 to a commercial sex worker who had disguised herself as a student from a local secondary school.

The commercial sex worker had pretended to be a student from Likii slums who had lost money on her way to school.

Another teacher from a primary school in Nanyuki town lost KES 47 650 fortnight ago to an innocent-looking girl.

The teacher’s colleagues said he had taken a loan from a local sacco amounting to KES 100 000.

The girls mostly target teachers from far-flung areas who come to the town mainly to get a loan from their local sacco.

A month ago a 19 year old girl wrestled with a 54 year old teacher in broad daylight after he allegedly failed to pay her KES 2 000 for sex.

Despite the fact that prostitution is illegal in Kenya, teachers and other victims are now appealing to authorities in the town to combat the vice.
