Teachers do not deserve pay hike, says MP

Nakuru - A member of parliament has said that teachers in the country do not deserve a pay rise because their performance and service delivery is below the standards.
Nakuru west MP, Samuel Arama said that the money teachers are asking for should instead be given to doctors and nurses whose services can be seen.
Speaking Tuesday in Nakuru town, Arama said that teachers in public schools should attain the performance standards of their counterparts in private schools before they start asking for pay increments.

“Teachers should show the country the kind of work they are doing before they can start asking for pay hikes. The performance in public schools is wanting,” said Arama.
He added: “The money the teachers are asking for is so much. A teacher cannot earn more than a doctor; the government should take the money they are asking for and give it to doctors and nurses.”
Arama said that it was cheaper to train a teacher than a doctor and thus their demands are not valid.
