Nyeri - A Primary School teacher was shot dead on Saturday night in Kieni west sub-County, Nyeri County after the Matatu he was traveling in was carjacked by armed robbers.
Bernard Mwaniki was going home when armed three robbers emerged from the bushes and ordered the driver of the matatu to stop.
However, the driver declined to obey and sped off forcing the robbers to shoot at the matatu.
Mwaniki, who was sitting in the front seat, was shot in the head and died instantly.
Area OCPD, John Kemboi said the robbers later escaped by foot to the nearby homestead belonging to a prominent businessman Herman Kairu, accosting him and his wife as they entered their home.
Kairu said that when their watchman opened the gate for his bosses, the robbers ambushed them and ordered them to get out of the car.
They then ransacked them taking away more than KES 40 000 that they had collected from their hotel business in Mweiga and beat up Kairu's wife.
Kairu said the robbers locked them from outside when they finished eating, stole their car and then drove to an unknown destination.
Police who were alerted after Mwaniki was shot tried to trace the robbers using sniffer dogs but unfortunately, they had already left in Kairu’s car.
The car was later recovered in Matanya shopping centre near Nanyuki where the robbers abandoned it after it ran out of fuel.
Kemboi said that they are pursuing crucial leads that may lead to the arrest of the three adding that they are going to intensify patrols along the Mwiyogo - Nyeri - Nyahururu Road.
Irked residents of Mwiyogo blocked the Nyeri - Nyahururu highway protesting the killing of Mwaniki, and demanding security to be beefed up.
They also wanted a section of the expansive Solio ranch that is occupied with shrubs to be cleared noting that it is a hiding heaven for robbers.
