Teacher arrested for caning student unconscious

24 February 2015, 10:32 Godfrey Olukya

Kampala - Police in Uganda have arrested a teacher who caned a student until he fell unconscious.

Capital punishment in Ugandan schools is prohibited although some teachers continue to punish the students by caning.

Sulaiti Muwanguzi, a Physics teacher at Kabowa high school in Kampala is behind bars after caning 16-year-old Carsteen Yesuanjjagala so badly that he became unconscious.

According to Uganda police spokesperson, Fred Enanga, the teacher reportedly caned the student after realizing that the student was not making notes during his lesson.

Even after the student explained that his exercise book was filled up and thus had nowhere to write on, the teacher went ahead to beat him.

Yesuanjjagala was rushed to a nearby clinic after losing consciousness. He later gained consciousness but was in deep pain on different parts of his body.

The teacher has been arrested and taken to Ndeeba police post.

Enanga said the teacher will be taken to court to be charged for administering corporal punishment and causing bodily harm.

According to other students, the teacher caned the boy before throwing the stick and raining blows on him several times.
