Tea farmers to receive a mini-bonus of KES 3
25 March 2015, 12:33
Nyeri - The Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) has said tea farmers in Nyeri, Murang’a and Kiambu Counties will get a mini-bonus of KES 3 per kilogram.
KTDA chairman, Peter Kanyago said tea growers will have the money in their bank accounts by May 25.
Speaking at Ragati tea factory, Kanyago said the mini-bonus was based on the first six months of the crop season which had not improved.
The declaration is however a relief to farmers who did not get the bonus last year, something that forced them to seek government’s intervention.

He said the agency is expecting better prices this year following low production and winter seasons in China and India which are some of the major markets for Kenyan tea.
“It was like last year but there is a ray of hope since the main bonus might be better. Prices in the first quarter have improved slightly,” he said.
Kanyago added that the agency has procured 60,000 metric tons of fertilizer and will arrive in the country in June and July.
