Tax evaders put on notice

31 July 2013, 17:08 Steve Wambugu

Nakuru County Governor Kinuthia Mbugua has put on notice tax evaders in the county that the local authority will catch up with them.

He said that some people have been evading the payment of rates saying his government is putting mechanism in place to apprehend all tax evaders.

The governor observed that the county was losing a lot of money through tax evasion

“Some few business people in our county have not been paying rates which is not good for the growth of our county,” he noted.

Addressing the media at his office on Wednesday, the county boss observed that the county greatly depends on the money generated through tax collection.

Kinuthia said that his county government expects to collect KES 1 billion through tax revenue this financial year.

“We have to get KES 1 billion but that will not be achieved if people keep on evading to pay the levy that’s why we have to enforce the law” he said

The governor said they hope to collect the money from local businesses in all the 11 sub-counties in the region.

He said that there will be an amnesty for those who will pay their rates before the stipulated time.

He also said that his officers will be going across the county to ensure the wanachi pay their taxes in time, saying that if every local resident adhered to the rule of law the county would be able to grow.
