Nairobi - Former Youth TV presenter Elizabeth Irungu has come out on
social media to narrate her near rape experience. She joins the growing list of
Kenyan personalities with such cases, from former presenter Eve D’souza, Radio
host Adelle Onyango to musician Habida.
These celebrities coming out with their
stories has sparked a revolution among women in the country, who have for a
long time had to live in silence.
Elizabeth narrates this ordeal in detail, giving her fans and
friends a glimpse into her experience. The man who tried to rape her was
apprehended and prosecuted for his actions. She acknowledges that she was lucky
to survive and asked those who have gone through similar experiences and might
not have been as lucky as her to speak up.
She wrote “I URGE ALL RAPE VICTIMS AND
ATTEMPTED RAPE TO SPEAK UP. Those sheikhs counseled me & told me it is not
something to be embarrased about coz it was not my fault at all. He was just a
bad evil person who did not fear God. So speak up ladies! Usiogope kuenda
ku-report mtu (don’t be afraid to go report).
Hakuna haya yoyote (there is no
shame)! JUST REPORT! TELL SOMEONE, parent, friend, pastor, sheikh, neighbour, your
brother, your siz. DO NOT SUFFER ALONE! TALK!"
