TSC's move to hire new teachers desperate, says Sossion

Nairobi - Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General, Wilson Sossion has termed Teachers Service Commission's move to hire 70 000 teachers as illegal and desperate.
According to Sossion, TSC is no longer independent as it has been taken hostage by other government entities to perform illegal activities like hiring on contract.
“TSC ... is taking every instruction from the government, including unworkable proposals,” Sossion said.

He said the move is meant to intimidate striking teachers, but maintained that they won’t be cowed.
“Hiring of tutors will alleviate crisis due to ongoing strike and if the TSC wants us to reach there, it is fine,” Sossion said.
He threatened to force TSC to permanently employ the teachers it will have employed on contract to get rid of the current teachers' shortage in the country.
“If TSC hires the 70 000 teachers, the union will force the government to retain them in order to address the teachers’ shortage in the country,” Sossion said.
