Nyeri - Governors in the Mount Kenya region elected on The National Alliance (TNA) party have been warned of unspecified severe actions if they dare support referendum push.
The party’s county officials said all elected and nominated leaders must adhere to the party’s position.
The officials said, following consultations with the national office, there will be no referendum campaigns in the region which is largely pro-government.
Speaking after a meeting at White Rhino Hotel, Nyeri town, the officials said that governors in the region supporting the referendum demands should realize that they were pushing an opposition agenda.
The officials were drawn from Tharaka-Nithi, Embu, Meru, Kirinyaga, Nyeri, Murang’a, Laikipia, Kiambu and Nyandarua counties.
Josiah Kuria, Kiambu County TNA chairman, warned the governors that if they support the quest they will face the wrath of the people and that of the party.
“Those supporting referendum should learn the mood of the people and will be dealt with severely by the party. They must toe to the party’s position whatsoever,” said Kuria.
Nyeri county TNA coordinator, Regina Macharia stated said during the meeting the officials declared to support the President and stand by him.
“Governors in this region calling for the referendum are enemies of the state, of the President and of the people,” said Regina.
