TI disputes reports on Kenya corruption index

06 September 2014, 11:04 Daisy Onkoba

Nairobi - Transparency International and Transparency International Kenya have not ranked Kenya the fourth most corrupt country in the world as reported by the media.

In a statement, TI-Kenya Executive Director Samuel Kimeu said media reports have erroneously interpreted data from the Global Corruption Barometer released in 2013 to make this declaration.

“The Global Corruption Barometer is not a ranking tool and in case anyone wants to assess Kenya’s ranking in relation to other countries and territories, Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index {CPI} is the appropriate tool,” he explained.

Kimeu added that the CPI is an aggregate index relying on other reputable indices and the views of experts, reflecting the perception of informed observers on corruption in the public sector and politics.

“The Corruption Perceptions Index 2013 ranks Kenya at position 136 out of 177 countries and territories surveyed, with a score of 27 on a scale of 0 to 100, where 0 is highly corrupt and 100 is very clean. The next edition of the CPI is expected at the beginning of December,” he elaborated.

Furthermore, he said that measuring corruption and providing statistical data is an intricate process and the Transparency International movement has different tools to measure different aspects of corruption.

“We therefore encourage the media and other users of our research to seek clarification and help to correctly apply the different tools and their findings. We are always happy to respond to any questions or clarifications needed to make sure these findings are communicated accurately,” Kimeu advised.
