Suspected witch roughed up by angry villagers in Meru

10 April 2014, 09:23 Kelvin Mureithi

Meru - A man suspected to be a witch was roughed up by villagers who stormed his home in Kaithe village in Meru County.

The 59-year-old man Eliud Ikunyua, was confronted by angry villagers who accused him of performing rituals at night and bewitching his neighbors.

"During day time, he poses as a preacher, conning the residents in the name of prayers," said the angry residents.

The villagers tortured him by pouring pepper in his eyes.

Speaking to the media, a woman from the fury mob said, "We have been waiting for the right time to capture the man to prove our suspicion, and today we finally trapped him after we invaded his home at dawn to seize him."

They found him walking naked with a whisker in his hand going round his cowshed chanting unrecognized words.

It was then that the youth amongst the mob got hold of him as he tried to escape on seeing.

They managed to get him and forced some chilly juice to his eyes forcing him to substantiate on what he was trying to do by walking around naked but their efforts did not bare any fruits.

Later on they took the helpless man to the chief who handed him to Meru police station where he is expected to appear in court and respond to witchcraft accusations.
