Poachers kill rhino in Laikipia

Heavily armed suspected poachers shot down a rhino at Ol Pejeta ranch in Laikipia Central before shooting down a 24-year-old man.
Confirming the incident, Laikipia East police boss Joshua Lutukai said that the unknown number of poachers shot down the animal using AK47 rifles and made away with its horn.
Lutukai said that the rhino had just given birth recently.
He further added that Washington Wamae was escorting his friend who had visited him at the nearby Kibubung’i area and upon returning back to his home, he encountered the poachers.
“They shot him on the stomach and ran away but luckily enough, he did not die,” said the police commander.
Lutukai said that Wamae was rushed to Nanyuki District Hospital, adding that he is now in a stable condition.
He said that his team is conducting investigations into the matter and that the poachers will be arrested.
Concurrently, fear has gripped residents of Gichagi kya Cecilia Village in the outskirts of Nanyuki town after the body of a 14-year-old boy was recovered besides Kanyoni road.
According to area residents who were engulfed with shock, the body whose name is unknown had injuries on the head and blood was oozing profusely from the mouth and nose.
They said that some dogs had even began feasting on the body before it was retrieved and taken to the Nanyuki Hospital District Mortuary for postmortem.
Police say that investigations are underway over the matter.
