Nyeri - A middle-aged man suspected to be a conman has escaped death by a whisker following a mob attack in Nyeri town.
The man, only identified as John Mwangi, was attacked after a woman operating an Mpesa shop raised alarm that he was trying to swindle her out of some money.
The woman said the suspect had conned her out of a mobile phone and phone accessories last week.
“When I saw him, I recalled that he was the same man who conned me last week. He was trying to con me again but I raised the alarm and the public responded,” narrated the woman.
Another woman, a footwear dealer, also came claiming that the suspect had defrauded him out of KES 5 000.

Members of the public confronted the suspect, roughed him up and frog-marched him along the streets ordering him to state all those he had defrauded.
The man was slightly injured as the mob, mostly mechanics, reined on him with kicks and blows.
He only suffered minor injuries on his face and legs while his trouser and shoes were torn.
Later, a platoon of police officers arrived and saved him from the irate mob that was baying for his blood.
Police arrested the suspect and asked the angry crowd which was resisting his arrest to follow the police car to Nyeri Central police station.
“Anyone with a complaint regarding this man should follow us to the police station but we cannot allow you to take the law into your hands,” said one of the police officers.
