Students injured in stampede during celebration of new school bus

14 July 2015, 14:36 Joseph Njung'eh

Nairobi - Seven students of Muruguru Girls High School in Nyeri town have been hospitalized after they were seriously injured in a road accident along Nyeri-Karatina road.

The students were injured in a stampede while welcoming a new school bus.

Two sustained fractures on their legs after a Nissan matatu which was plying the highway lost control and hit them.

The more than 300 students had jammed the highway to welcome the new bus of the school, according to school Principal Esther Kirira.

Kirira said the Nissan matatu had been obstructed by a minor accident on the road.

“They were rushed to Nyeri Referral Hospital where two of them were admitted while the others were discharged,” said the principal.

The KES 11 million bus was bought through the efforts of parents after the previous one started developing mechanical problems.

“The 67-seater bus is a very major achievement in the school since the students are very excited about it. We shall now lower the cost of transport whenever traveling out of the school,” said the Principal.
